Keppie Design - Artist Studio

DESIGN BRIEF
Director of Keppie Design - David Ross is the mentor for this project. I was asked to design an artist studio for sculptress ‘Amber Cowan’. The artist creates glass sculptures and she has been working on it for over fifteen years. I did the research for materials, equipment and tools that she needed for this kind of work. In my final concept I decided to go with the last concept which in my opinion is the most detailed and decorative. I created a great studio for this artist, in which she can work in a really favourable condition, and allows her to teach students her profession, sell and show her work, meet with the clients. On an additional floor she can sleep and relax if she needs to, which can also be used by employees. The colour scheme of this project is quite subdued so I decided to add a little colour it is not very saturated so that the inspirational aura dosen`t spoil. The materials used in the overall design are of good quality and sustainable which will last a lifetime. The most important factor is the use of light. I gave priority to natural light throughout the design. In the workspace I used glass ceilings from which I hung long chandeliers with many bulbs, so that Amber can also work through the night. The large cast iron framed windows allow natural light to flow throughout the studio casting interesting shadows of the cast iron design creating a great atmosphere perfect to work with the art.
